PITTCON 08 Oral Session

Non-suppressed conductivity detection of lanthanides
Session Number 830-13

Abstract
The determination of lanthanides is of particular interest in environmental and nuclear chemistry. All reported ion chromatographic methods for the determination of lanthanides use either hyphenated techniques, such as IC/MS, IC-ICP/MS or post-column derivatization, followed by UV/VIS detection. A new method for the determination of lanthanides by ion chromatography with non-suppressed conductivity detection has been developed using the Nucleosil 5 SA and the Metrosep C 3 columns. The analytical challenge consisted in analyzing trace level concentrations of lanthanides in the presence of common cations and interfering transition metals. In view of this, eluent composition, eluent concentration and column temperature were optimized in order to obtain the best isocratic separation conditions. The limit of detection (LOD) was improved by including a sample preconcentration step. By varying the pH, as well as the composition and concentration of the carrier solution, 13 lanthanides could be sensitively detected after removing the transition metals. The whole run including sample preparation takes 60 minutes. This communication presents the optimized ion chromatographic analysis of a water sample and a metal extract, diluted in 4 mmol/L nitric acid, from a nuclear research facility. For both samples satisfying spike recoveries and reproducibilities were observed.
