The upcoming IC column generation: New column types with built-in intelligence
Session Number 830-10
Abstract The new generation of anion exchanger columns combines the mechanical and chemical robustness of polymer carrier materials with unique selectivity and high separation efficiency. New synthesis techniques take advantage of the robustness of surface-functionalized materials and the high separation efficiencies of agglomerated materials. As the robustness of an anion exchanger is determined by the chemical bonding of the molecular anion exchanger group, a covalently bound ion-exchanger group has decisive advantages. Due to the special design of the carrier material, the morphology results in low diffusion rates, which translates into high separation efficiencies and low signal asymmetries. In combination with a monodisperse styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer carrier material, an outstanding chemical and mechanical ruggedness is obtained. In combination with the new 850 IC Professional instrument family, the new iColumns offer unprecedented possibilities. A rewritable chip in the column head contains essential data such as optimal flow rate and pressure limits. Moreover, the chip can store additional parameters that are then available for future analytical tasks. Just a single mouse click is sufficient to include the information in the method to be used. Since all important data is stored on the chip, the iColumn, when used with different Professional ion chromatographs, takes all of the information with it. This ensures gapless traceability and GLP monitoring for all of the columns used in different Professional IC systems.
