PITTCON 08 Oral Session
Determination of anions and cations in aerosols by ion chromatography
Session Number 2670-5
Abstract The determination of anions and cations in aerosols yields essential information concerning air quality. Up to now, these determinations were carried out using filters; however, this method requires a time span of 24 hours or more to determine averages. Moreover, the results can be falsified by desorption processes and chemical transformations. Thus, the reliability of such results is questionable. In contrast to the above, the particle sampler to be described allows continuous sampling of aerosols. Changes in the ionic composition of the aerosols are monitored. The sampling system is coupled to an 850 Professional IC for anions and cations, which allows quasi-continuous measurements. The temporal resolution is 5 to 15 minutes. Rapid changes can thus be registered immediately and correlated with meteorological data. Examples of measurements from different regions are shown (agricultural, metropolitan).
