PITTCON 08 Oral Session

Automated intelligent dilution
Session Number 1290-2

Abstract
The combination of the 850 Professional IC, the 858 Professional Sample Processor and MagIC Net™ software offers a variety of sophisticated sample preparation techniques. One of these is automated intelligent dilution. In order to perform automated dilutions the above-mentioned instrument setup is additionally equipped with a magnetic stirrer and an 800 Dosino®. The latter aspirates a defined volume of a concentrated sample and transfers it to the mixing vessel. Subsequently, the diluent, generally ultrapure water, is dosed into the mixing vessel. After intensive stirring, the peristaltic pump of the sample changer transfers the sample to the injection valve of the ion chromatograph, where the sample constituents are separated and detected. After the quantitation of the sample's constituents, the software verifies if the concentrations are within the calibration range. If this is the case, the next sample will be analyzed. If not, the software, after calculating the appropriate dilution factor, reanalyzes the sample. This paper will give a description of the straightforward analytical setup and demonstrate the usefulness of the automated intelligent dilution in a number of typical analytical chemistry applications.
